Concussion Management

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury that is caused by either a direct force to the head or a force transmitted through the body to the head. Concussions can be caused by a variety of injuries not limited to sports, falls or car accidents.

In the majority of people, concussion symptoms resolve within 10 days; however, for the 20% that continue to have prolonged symptoms, it is very important for people to seek physical therapy treatment.

We offer a comprehensive Concussion Management Program that is individualized to the patient.

Physical therapy will help recover balance, postural control, gaze stability, focus, gait and mood.

Treatment will focus on the following:

  • Vestibular/Balance/Oculomotor rehabilitation
  • Coordination training
  • Orthopedic evaluation of the neck that may contribute to headache symptoms
  • Progression of aerobic tolerance
  • Education on pathophysiology of concussion
  • Coping strategies
Physical Therapists Greer Mackie and Kira Davis discuss how physical therapy plays an important role in concussion management. Kira and Greer have some candid conversation about Greer’s sports and concussion history.
